If you’re looking for a garden flower with show appeal, hydrangea flowers are truly stunning. Large globes of flowers cover this shrub in summer and spring. Although their appearance may seem high maintenance, with the right conditions and care, hydrangeas are actually fairly easy to grow. So grab your garden gloves, because our growing hydrangeas guide will have you ready to plant in no time. Best time to plant hydrangeas Fall is the best season to plant hydrangeas, followed by early spring. The idea is to give the shrub plenty of time to establish a healthy root system before blooming. The best time of day to plant is early morning or late afternoon. The cooler parts of the day offer protection against heat stress. Keep new plants well-watered until established. Best soil for hydrangeas Hydrangeas grow well in soil containing an abundance of organic material. Good drainage is vital. While hydrangeas like moist soil, they cannot tolerate being waterlogged. Soggy, poor draining soils can cause root rot. In just a few weeks, your hydrangeas can quickly die. If you have heavy soil, consider mixing in plenty of compost prior to planting to improve soil quality. Water at a rate of 1 inch per week throughout the growing season. Deeply water 3 times a week to encourage root growth. Bigleaf and smooth hydrangeas require more water, but all varieties benefit from consistent moisture. Use a soaker hose to water deeply and keep moisture off the flowers and leaves. Watering in the morning will help prevent hydrangeas from wilting during hot days. Add mulch underneath your hydrangeas to help keep the soil moist and cool. An organic mulch breaks down over time, adding nutrients and improving soil texture. Bigleaf hydrangeas need several light fertilizer applications in March, May and June. Oakleaf and panicle hydrangeas do best with two applications in April and June. Smooth hydrangea plants only need fertilization once, in late winter. Protect against pests and disease by choosing cultivars with resistant traits. Leaf spots, bight, wilt and powdery mildew can all appear on hydrangeas. Pests are not common on hydrangeas, but can appear when plants become stressed. Possible pests include aphids, leaf tiers and red spider mites. Properly caring for hydrangeas is your best defense. 🌳 I hope you will like it! Growing Hydrangea and expecting lots of flowers? If yes, then do all these simple things NOW. The process is really very simple - You would need to prune your Hydrangea plant. But, please be very careful and don't prune your Hydrangea plant without knowing the variety you are growing. The two of the most common Hydrangea varieties are - 1. Smooth Hydrangea 2. Big leaf Hydrangea. We can prune smooth Hydrangea at this time but not Big leaf Hydrangea. Anyway, you don't have to worry anything. You would be able to see both varieties in the video. A cheap and rewarding way to increase your plant collection is to take summer cuttings. Any spares can be swapped with friends, adding to the range of plants in your garden. In this video we guide you through a quick step by step process of how to take hydrangea cuttings. The best time to take hydrangea cuttings is late summer from the current season’s growth. Cuttings are made from semi-ripe stems that are still green and supple at the top with a base that is just beginning to harden and turn woody. This woody base stops the cuttings rotting in the compost. Hydrangea cuttings will take 2-3 weeks to root. Looking for more information? This summer has been an interesting year for hydrangeas where I live. I have noticed many varieties having tiny blooms or no blooms at all. At the sametime, I have noticed some varieties still going strong despite a late spring frost and exceptionally dry soil. The Incredible, Limelight, and Firelight Hydrangeas are demonstrating there toughness and resilience no matter what the climate brings them. I highly recommend planting these varieties in your own yard for reliable blooms every year. They are cold hardy and beautiful. I have a love for Hydrangeas and will always find a way to grow them in my yard. Thanks For Watching and Have a Great Day Gardening! Steph AKA TheFlowerFanatic
