The new structure built to confine Chernobyl’s damaged reactor number 4 was shown to the media for the first time at the nuclear power plant in Ukraine. With a span of 843 feet, the special shelter is the largest moveable land-based structure ever built, and it took nine years to complete. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development funded the new confinement project with €715 million, alongside contributions from the European Union and 45 other countries. Chernobyl last movement of the Sarcophagus. The New Safe Confinement (NSC or New Shelter, rarely Arka) is a structure put in place in 2016 to confine the remains of the number 4 reactor unit at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in Ukraine, which was destroyed during the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The structure also encloses the temporary Shelter Structure (sarcophagus) that was built around the reactor immediately after the disaster. The New Safe Confinement is designed to prevent the release of radioactive contaminants, protect the reactor from external influence, facilitate the disassembly and decommissioning of the reactor, and prevent water intrusion. The New Safe Confinement is a megaproject that is part of the Shelter Implementation Plan and supported by the Chernobyl Shelter Fund. It was designed with the primary goal of confining the radioactive remains of reactor 4 for the next 100 years. It also aims to allow for a partial demolition of the original sarcophagus, which was hastily constructed by Chernobyl liquidators after a beyond design-basis accident destroyed the reactor. The word confinement is used rather than the traditional containment to emphasize the difference between the containment of radioactive gases—the primary focus of most reactor containment buildings—and the confinement of solid radioactive waste, which is the primary purpose of the New Safe Confinement. In 2015, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) stated that the international community was aiming to close a €100 million funding gap, with administration by the EBRD in its role as manager of the Chernobyl decommissioning funds. The total cost of the Shelter Implementation Plan, of which the New Safe Confinement is the most prominent element, is estimated to be around €2.15 billion (US$2.3 billion). The New Safe Confinement accounts for €1.5 billion. The French consortium Novarka with partners Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Bouygues Travaux Publics designed and built the New Safe Confinement. Construction was completed at the end of 2018.

Thirty years after the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, the radioactive remains of the power plant’s destroyed reactor 4 have been safely enclosed following one of the world’s most ambitious engineering projects. Chernobyl’s giant New Safe Confi nement (NSC) was moved over a distance of 327 metres from its assembly point to its fi nal resting place, completely enclosing a previous makeshift shelter that was hastily assembled immediately after the 1986 accident. The structure was built by Novarka, a consortium of the French construction firms VINCI Construction and Bouygues Construction. Works started in 2010.

CNN's Fred Pleitgen visits the abandoned Russian military positions in Chernobyl where Russian soldiers went into the Red Forest, the most nuclear contaminated area on the planet, and brought back radioactive dust. Ukrainians shocked by 'crazy' scene at Chernobyl after Russian pullout reveals radioactive contamination Chernobyl, Ukraine (CNN)The sudden ear-piercing beep of a radiation meter fills the room as a Ukrainian soldier walks in. This is where Russian soldiers were living at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and radiation levels are now higher than normal. There's no visible presence of the source of the radioactive material in the room, but Ukrainian officials say it's coming from small particles and dust that the soldiers brought into the building. "They went to the Red Forest and brought radioactive material back with them on their shoes," soldier Ihor Ugolkov explains. "Other places are fine, but radiation increased here, because they were living here." CNN was given exclusive access to the power plant for the first time since it came back into Ukrainian control. Officials at the plant explain the levels inside the room used by Russian soldiers are only slightly above what the World Nuclear Association describes as naturally occurring radiation. One-time contact would not be dangerous but continuous exposure would pose a health hazard. "They went everywhere, and they also took some radioactive dust on them [when they left]," Ugolkov adds. It's an example of what Ukrainian officials say was the lax and careless behavior of Russian soldiers while they were in control of the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster. The area around Chernobyl, namely the Red Forest, is still the most nuclear contaminated area on the planet, with most of the radioactive particles present on the soil. Read more at: 🤍

🤍 With the 27th anniversary of the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, it is a time to reflect, but also a time to look to the future. Construction on a new shelter for the town's infamous power station is on track and is due to be finished by October 2015. The new sarcophagus will safely contain the radioactive emissions of Chernobyl for the next 100 years. Chernobyl's Ivankiv hospital is receiving 1.4 million euros from the EU for equipment to measure radioactivity. For the first time residents in the Ukrainian town will have a place to go where they can check levels in their food. The equipment will also be used to check contamination levels in the local population. "It's an open secret that this area is still contaminated, and though the level of some radioactive elements like Cesium-137 in some products is lower than 10 years ago, they are still very dangerous," said Yuriy Bandazhevskiy from the Science and Technology centre in Ukraine. The 1986 accident released a lethal radioactive cloud, which contaminated swathes of Ukraine, Belarus and further afield. There is controversy over the death toll, however some claim up to five million people have been affected. By the fall of 1986, the emergency crews fighting to contain the nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant made it into the basement. They turned a corner into a steam corridor beneath failed reactor Number 4 and found not steam, but black lava that had oozed out of the core, eaten through meters of concrete, and settled on the floor. The largest and most famous formation in the corridor was a two-ton wrinkled mass that their radiation sensors firmly told them not to approach. With cameras pushed in from around a corner, the workers documented the dimly lit mass. Chernobyl’s giant New Safe Confinement (NSC) was moved over a distance of 327 metres from its assembly point to its final resting place, completely enclosing a previous makeshift shelter that was hastily assembled immediately after the 1986 accident. The equipment in the New Safe Confinement will now be connected to the new technological building which will serve as a control room for future operations inside the arch. The New Safe Confinement will be sealed off from the environment hermetically. Finally, after intensive testing of all equipment and commissioning, handover of the New Safe Confinement to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant administration is expected in November 2017.
35 years after the worst nuclear disaster in history, parts of Chernobyl are still too radioactive for people to go to. Abandoned and frozen in time, the site of the nuclear plant in Ukraine has posed unanswered questions for decades. Due to the scramble to leave the site following the accident, there was no record of whether the holding pools in Reactor Five stored nuclear fuel. For the first time since the 1986 disaster, drone pilots and researchers were able to go on-site and use state-of-the-art technology to answer some of those questions. Their Elios 2 drone explored areas not seen in decades while searching for signs of nuclear waste. The Chernobyl damaged reactor is now safely confined thanks to the word and dedication of the 10,000 employees of NOVARKA (50% VINCI Construction Grands Projets, leader, and 50% Bouygues Travaux Publics) since the contract was signed in 2007. This project, stemming from the international ideas contest launched by Ukraine in 1992 and won by Campenon Bernard SGE (which later became VINCI Construction Grands Projets), allows both confinement and dismantling of the damaged reactor thanks to remote controlled tools installed inside the arch. The New safe Confinement has been built in front of the reactor, in a cleaned area, and then slid over 327 meters since the beginning of November 2016.
