This past weekend I purchased my first sanshin!!! I am SO excited. I have been wanting to learn how to play this instrument, but had not found the right teacher. This all happened because one of my former professors from Cal Poly contacted me asking if I could help him find a sanshin (he would be playing a piece written for the sanshin and I was the only person in Okinawa he knew). As I searched for the right sanshin for my professor, I came across a store where they 1. had high quality sanshin instruments 2. gave lessons 3. spoke English!!! Even though I speak enough Japanese to get around and meet new people, I wanted to find a teacher who spoke English so that I could ask questions and get detailed instructions. I will be going to my sanshin lessons every Tuesday and Friday and will be recording progress videos on the weekend. The sanshin is the traditional instrument of Okinawa. It is believed that the instrument came from China before Okinawa was part of Japan. The word sanshin literally means "3 strings." The Sanshin, a three string guitar or banjo, is an Okinawan musical instrument and precursor to the more popular Shamisen. Unlike Shamisen however, Sanshin are traditionally made of bamboo and covered with the skin of the Burmese or reticulated python. Okinawa Sanshin is by far one of my favorite Japanese traditional music styles. I was lucky enough that day to be able to shoot a few clips of a small concert held in the lobby of our hotel. There is an area of Okinawa called Koza Music Town and even though Google didn't yield any sanshin shop search results, I thought I would try my luck and go there anyway. We arrived at Teruya music shop and didn't see any Sanshin. The employees at the shop directed us to another shop, where they exclusively made and sold Sanshin. The Teruya Sanshin shopping experience was incredible. They were so warm and welcoming. They even served us tea and snacks while we were there. i made myself a Shamisen from 100% organic material. this Sanshin was made after seeing a couple of Japanese videos. no measurements were ever made and no plans either. i just build it from memory. my plank wasnt very long so it is why the neck isnt the normal length. the body is from an old drawer and all the wood used in this was from the garbage. i bought a kit of guitar strings for 6$ and some thumb tacks. this is also real animal skin as according to the traditional method used in japan from century.

On our quest to create the most interesting new indie music, we like to experiment with all sorts of sounds. In this video, I give you a quick look at an unusual instrument I picked up and hope to use in future music! It is called a Sanshin and it is native to the Japanese island of Okinawa, it is like a smaller version of the more well known Shamisen and sounds a bit like a banjo :) It has 3 nylon strings and is fretless! We have two ideas for what to use this for, please vote in the comments which one you would like to see.
